Tapir Field Veterinary Manual
High quality veterinary protocols are key to successful handling
of wild tapirs. Our new Tapir Field Veterinary Manual outlines
topics specific to tapir species:
1. Capture methods
2. Tapir anatomy
3. Chemical restraints
4. Collection and handling of biological samples
5. Reproduction
... and many other topics.

The IUCN/SSC TSG consists of field veterinarians
in tapir habitat countries, as well as zoo professionals in said
countries as well as Europe, North America and Australia. The
Tapir Specialist Group believes in excellence in animal care, whether
it be of animals in zoos, or those studied in the wild. Those of
us working with captive animals have come to understand the special
needs of tapirs in captivity. Our researchers in the field work
in tandem with wildlife veterinarians, and it is our goal to provide
a vet to every researcher whenever immobilisation is involved.
TSG Veterinary Commitee Goals:
- Place veterinarians into multidisciplinary
teams involved in tapir conservation projects.
- Compile bibliographic materials based
on the experience of each professional working on any of the tapir
species.
- Standardize field methodologies that
guarantee that health studies will be effectively and consistently
conducted.
The role of the
veterinarian in tapir conservation:
- Solving and investigating
the problems of capture and immobilization.
- Diagnosing and identifying
infectious and non-infectious diseases that can potentially affect
individuals and populations
- Establishing and implementing
protocols for the collection of biological samples to facilitate
the assessment of the health status of the animals.
In short, the interaction between the veterinarian
and field projects is singular, and the presence of the veterinarian
assures the evaluation of all the physiological, metabolic and biomedical
parameters directly or indirectly involved with the survival of tapirs.
